The 28th annual congress of the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM) is the global scientific meeting place for addiction medicine physicians, psychiatrists, researchers, and policymakers. The three-day event at De Doelen Rotterdam brings together specialists from around the world for lectures, symposia, workshops, and poster presentations on the congress theme “Improving addiction treatment outcome: tackling old and new challenges.” The Global Addiction Therapeutics Innovation Day (GATID), which is open to the public, will take place on September 30th.
Global scientific platform for addiction medicine
The International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM) is the leading international professional association for physicians and professionals involved in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of addiction. The annual ISAM congress is the central international platform for knowledge exchange, research presentations, and professional development in the field of addiction medicine. The Netherlands has a long tradition in addiction research: several Dutch institutes are affiliated with universities and treatment centers, and in 2012, the Royal Dutch Medical Association (KNMG) recognized addiction medicine as an official profile with a two-year, full-time program.

The overarching conference theme is “Improving Addiction Treatment Outcomes: Tackling Old and New Challenges.” The program consists of keynote lectures, symposia, oral presentations, workshops, and poster presentations on 25 topics, including recovery management and relapse prevention, rehabilitation, behavioral addiction, trauma and addiction, harm reduction, women and addiction, treatment of opioid, stimulant, and alcohol use disorders, new psychoactive substances, comorbidity (psychiatric and somatic), ethics, epidemiology, stigma reduction, and innovations in prevention, diagnostics, and therapy.
