Art Basel was founded in 1970 by three Basel gallery owners and has since become the leading international art fair for modern and contemporary art. The Basel edition is the annual hub of the international art world. In 2026, more than 290 galleries from 43 countries will participate, showcasing works by over 4,000 artists. Over 88,000 visitors from around the world will find their way to Messe Basel.

Multiple sectors for various art forms

Art Basel in Basel is comprised of a series of curated sections, each with its own focus. Galleries presents modern masters alongside top contemporary galleries. Unlimited showcases large-scale installations, video art, and performances—first curated by Ruba Katrib in 2026. Statements offers solo projects by emerging artists, Premiere focuses on work from the past five years, and Feature presents art historical projects from the twentieth century. Parcours brings site-specific works along Clarastrasse towards the Rhine, while the Messeplatz project places public art commissions within Basel’s urban spaces.

An art week that encompasses the entire city

In addition to the trade fair itself, Art Basel transforms the entire region into a platform for contemporary art. In 2026, Art Basel Awards laureates—visual artists Nairy Baghramian and Ibrahim Mahama—will present public works on Messeplatz and Münsterplatz, respectively. Parallel to the fair, exhibitions will take place at the Fondation Beyeler, the Kunstmuseum Basel, and numerous other institutions throughout the city. The lead partner is UBS.
