The 40th EBC Congress is the leading biennial scientific and technical conference for the European and global beer industry, organized by the European Brewery Convention—the scientific and technical knowledge body of The Brewers of Europe. This fourth-year event in Rotterdam brings together brewing scientists, brewers, academics, and suppliers from around the world for lectures, poster presentations, and a trade exhibition. The 40th edition also marks the nearly 80th anniversary of the congress, which began in 1947.

Nearly eighty years of brewing science on one stage

The European Brewery Convention (EBC) is the scientific and technical knowledge body of The Brewers of Europe—the umbrella European brewers’ federation with members in 29 countries. Held biennially, the EBC Congress has been considered the leading international platform for knowledge exchange in brewing technology, malting science, and fermentation research since 1947. The 40th edition in Rotterdam is the first to take place this autumn and features a more compact program with fewer parallel sessions and a carefully curated selection of lectures.

Program and themes

The conference program consists exclusively of technical-scientific contributions, selected through an open call for abstracts. The central themes are brewing technology and innovation, raw materials (hops, barley, malt, adjuncts, and auxiliaries), sustainability in theory and practice, digitalization and artificial intelligence in production and quality control, and analysis and measurement methods. In addition, there are specific thematic areas such as non-Saccharomyces fermentations, sour beers, packaging technology, and downstream processing. Besides the lectures and poster presentations, the accompanying trade exhibition offers companies the opportunity to present their latest R&D projects and services.

Who is the EBC Congress for?

Participants typically consist of approximately 30% breweries of all sizes, 40% academics from universities and research institutes, and 30% brewing specialists from suppliers and service providers in the beer and malting sector. Members of national brewing associations and press representatives are also welcome.
